Maintaining Work-Life Balance
In the busy world that we live in, it can be challenging, difficult, and stressful to maintain a good balance in our lives. We’re on the go all the time, so it seems. Our minds keep racing to that next thing, that next event that we want to get accomplished, so that we can move on to the next thing. Then, before we know it, the day passes by, and time seems to get away from us very quickly.
According to a research study by Queen’s University, our brains have over 6,000 thoughts in any given day. That’s a lot of different things processing in our heads! What time will we wake up? What needs to get done today? When do I need to tend to this task? It’s mindless and mindful thinking. If you are interested in learning more about this study, click here.
So, how can we get in control of our mindset to focus on maintaining that work-life balance in our lives? What steps should we take to tune into our minds and our bodies to be at our best selves each day?
Here are a few tips that I wanted to share with you that have changed my life recently as a Recruiter, Career Coach, and new Business Owner:
1. Find time in the day to be “in tune” with yourself.
Now, I am not talking about being with yourself at work. I am talking about really finding that time, whether it’s in the morning, during the day, or in the evening, to spend time with yourself doing absolutely nothing. Tune into your breathing and being. Bring each subconscious breath that your brain is processing into your conscious thoughts and meditate. Focus on each inhale, exhale, and your breath in between each inhale and exhale.
2. Rest, Reflect, and Prepare
I call this the R + R + P = S formula.
With rest, reflection, and preparation comes SUCCESS. It’s that “work smarter, not harder” scenario that this formula represents. Our minds tell us that we need to do more, that we should remain busy so that we can accomplish more each day. However, if we take on too much in the day, then we will eventually fall into fatigue and the feeling of burnout will come into effect either quickly or eventually through time.
Rest – This one is a given, so get some rest! Get the proper hours of sleep that you need to get well-rested for the next day. Also, rest by doing some of Step 1 above! Breathe, meditate, and calm your mind and body.
Reflect – This one takes a little more work and really tuning into your inner self, which is why I recommend writing, journaling, or documenting your thoughts. How are you feeling physically and mentally? Are you happy with yourself in this moment? Where do you see yourself in the future? What plans do you have to get there? What’s next in your life?
Prepare – With preparation comes action. Find time in your day to create a plan and stick to it. Find an accountability partner, a manager, a family member, a friend, or a coach, who is able to check in with you, to see what your expectations are, and how your plans are going.
3. Make fine-tune changes, as needed.
If there is a routine in your day that is keeping you from maintaining work-life balance, then make small adjustments. Earlier in the year, I used to sleep in later during the weekdays. This actually kept me from performing at my best, so I decided to wake up earlier to work on self-development projects, journal, and review my notes for the day before I get into the work day. On the flip side, if you like staying up later at night to get things done, then utilize that approach, which leads to my final tip.
4. Do what is best for you.
At the end of the day, your journey is what you make of it, so it should be what you want it to be. If you are in a job position that isn’t getting you where you want to go in your career or life, then make changes. Seek help, when needed. Find support groups and people who will hold you accountable.
And, most importantly, never ever give up.
